Staying safe while using technology starts with understanding how your tools actually handle your data. This questionnaire has 35 questions covering everyday technology like email, messaging, browsers, AI tools, payment methods, and more. For each question, there is an educational section beneath it that explains how the most common options handle your data: what they collect, what the company does with it, and whether what you do is tied to your identity. It also covers privacy and security-focused alternatives to many mainstream apps and services that you may not have heard of. Each educational section starts with a short preview and can be expanded for the full details.
Congratulations on making it through all 35 questions.
If you read the educational sections of each question, you've just done something most people never do. You've seen the full picture of how the technology you use every day actually operates, not as neutral tools, but as an ecosystem that by default extracts everything it can from you: what you search for, who you talk to, where you go, what you read, what you buy and what you think. Most people exist within this system at a level of awareness somewhere between zero and two out of ten. If you read through all the educational sections, you're now at about an eight or a nine.
You are now understanding, maybe for the first time, that this isn't a collection of unrelated apps and services. It's the infrastructure of your life. And right now, that infrastructure is built to take from you, not to protect you.
If you skipped the educational sections, this is a good time to flip back through the questions that matter most to you. Now that you've seen what's being asked, the details will mean more.
The world we live in is going through a dynamic shift and almost every major aspect of human life is moving toward a state of total surveillance. In a landscape that is constantly in flux, every message, payment, location ping and voice command is being collected, analyzed, and stored so that at any given moment it can be used against you. The mainstream infrastructure that you operate in everyday, willingly or unwillingly, is not designed with your best interest in mind. It is designed to extract the maximum amount of data possible from you so that your actions and motivations can be seen in a transparent way. So that your every thought, feeling and action in the present moment or the future can be predicted, planned for and punished if necessary.
Today, the same infrastructures and algorithms that recommend a product to you are simultaneously being used to determine whether you can get a loan, get a job or move into the neighbourhood of your choosing. Tomorrow the offspring of these infrastructures and algorithms will determine whether you're allowed to leave the place that you live, have children, or face incarceration for a crime that you have not yet committed, but based on a real-time psycho-spiritual profile, you are capable of or likely to commit.
Yet, all is not lost. As we transition ever deeper into this realm of possibilities you still have to live your daily life. Privacy and security exist on a spectrum; you can be more or less safe. Even though a thief can still break in through the windows, most people still lock their doors at night and when they leave home. So the proper mindset to adopt around privacy and security is to become more safe within your current circumstances and capabilities. For almost every mainstream app, product or service in this questionnaire there are real alternatives and in some cases entire ecosystems that have been built around improving your privacy, security, and anonymity. They exist, they work and now you know where to find them.
This questionnaire was researched as of September 2026. The specific products and policies will change, but the patterns of data collection and the attempt at total real-time knowledge and control likely will not. Keep this questionnaire, reference it when you need it and when you are ready to make a change in an area that is important to you, you will already know how to start.
